1957 Willerby Vogue caravan - www.willerby.littleplumstead.com 06 March 2007 by Willerby
Willerby was built by Willerby Caravan Co Ltd, Willerby, Hull in 1957 one of 115 Vogue models which were made entirely of Armourplast (GRP or fibreglass to you and me). In the early fifties, known as Yorkshire Apiaries, they had built a couple of lightweight caravans using canvas and aluminium exterior panels. Getting cocky, and hearing from MacMillan that the general public had "Never had it so good" they then experimented with a GRP - fibreglass - caravan called the Vista. It was a roaring failure because it was extremely heavy. None too pretty either... Undeterred, the designers went back to the drawing board and in 1956 they launched me. The Willerby Vogue. At 14'7" in length and 'only' 17cwt (1700 lbs or 800kg) I was three feet shorter than my ugly Vista sister (did you see what I did there?) and a whole 500 lbs lighter. Now, I'm no size zero myself and so it came to pass that despite being one of the prettiest caravans around, I didn't sell particularly well either..... |
